Meli.... I am looking for history of the Model B, in particular, regarding the gears and speeds of the different years. My cousin has a 1946 Model B and I have a 1951 B and his 46 is so much faster than my 51. When did the speeds change and is there a site I can go to print this out for us? Thank you. |
Even though the engine size of the Model B tractor was changed three times, the transmission was actually changed FOUR times. The original unstyled Model B from 1935 to 1938 had four speeds. Actually, it was a two speed transmission with a high and low range: First gear... 2-1/3 mph Second gear... 3 mph Third gear... 4-3/4 mph Fourth gear... 6-1/4 mph Reverse... 3-1/2 mph The Model B was styled in 1939. For 1939 and 1940 it also had the same method of obtaining four speeds, but fourth gear was slightly slower than in the earlier transmission: First gear... 2-1/3 mph Second gear... 3 mph Third gear... 4-3/4 mph Fourth gear... 5-1/4 mph Reverse... 3-3/4 mph Many changes were made in 1941 and among them was a three speed transmission with a high and low range for a total of six speeds: First gear... 2-1/2 mph Second gear... 3-1/4 mph Third gear... 4-1/4 mph Fourth gear... 5-1/4 mph Fifth gear... 7-1/3 mph Sixth gear... 12-1/2 mph Reverse... 4 mph Then finally, late in 1947, the entire tractor was revised again and among the changes was a new six speed transmission with six independent speeds: First gear... 1-1/2 mph Second gear... 2-1/2 mph Third gear... 3-1/2 mph Fourth gear... 4-1/2 mph Fifth gear... 5-3/4 mph Sixth gear... 10 mph Reverse... 2-1/2 mph You have to realize that all of these speeds depend on the throttle adjustment of the engine, and the size of the wheels and/or tires. |
