Furniture production is not the norm at Michael Humphries Woodworking, but it certainly isn't unusual. After all, furniture making is included in the job description of "cabinetmaking". Please scroll down to see some of the furniture pieces that Gene made.... |
This platform bed is made of solid cherry. It has an unusual "lattice work" headboard. The open spaces at the sides are for huge storage drawers with continuous grain solid cherry fronts (You'll see them below). |
These are the nightstands that go with the bed. The tops and shelves have cherry internal edge bands and the veneers are "bookmatched" plainsawn cherry. The tops were offered to the customer with a four-way bookmatch of "figured cherry" (Shown at the right), but he decided on the simpler style. Notice how the lower shelves are not attached to the legs, but they are "floating" above the arched stretchers. |
This is a side view of the bed, showing the drawers installed. Gene made these "occasional tables" for the same customer. |
The center section of the round tops are bookmatched cherry veneer. The "rim" is made of pieces of solid cherry assembled like the rim of a wagon wheel. The aprons were laminated, bent, and veneered on a curved form in the vacuum bag. Special fixtures had to be built for trimming and mortising the aprons |
