This tube is the end of the fan shaft housing. The support ring had fallen apart and the end of the tube vibrated against the the casting it goes into until it wore through.

The part we are showing you is the very end of part number 42 in this exploded diagram from the parts catalog.

Brad cut away the damaged area, welded in new metal, and machined it to blend in to the original surface.
