A Steel Wheel !?

Rear of No5, photo by Lucas Rea

Steel wheel, photo by Lucas Rea      Most No.5 mowers have a rubber tire as the "tail wheel". According to the original owner's manual, the steel wheel was standard equipment and the rubber tire was "extra equipment". I'm sure it was also "extra cost", so I'm surprised we don't see more steel wheels around. If anyone knows why, please email.
The steel wheel is in the parts catalog under several different part numbers - AZ3017H, AZ2248H, JD1908H and JD972H. It was available from 1934 to 1945. Here is a close up shot of it. These pictures were submitted by Lucas Rea who owns the mower that is shown.
