Click here to see more pictures of Helen Zygmont Tencza MERIDEN — Helen (Zygmont) Tencza, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the Westfield Care and Rehab Center. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Edward F. Tencza.
   Helen was born in Meriden on Oct. 6, 1919 to the late Konstanty and Josephine Zygmont, who immigrated to the United States from Poland. Helen graduated Meriden Hospital School of Nursing in September of 1941 and became a U.S. Army nurse in March of 1943. Lt. Zygmont served in the 84th station hospital in Australia and the 105th general hospital in New Guinea. Helen was a lifelong parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, word puzzles and tending her flower garden.
   Helen will be deeply missed by her granddaughter, Kitty Tencza and great-grandson Kevin Beeman, both of Meriden. They would like to thank the staff at Westfield for all of their kindness over the years. Helen leaves one sister, Irene (Zygmont) Cleveland of Beverly, Mass.; four sons, Gene and Daniel of Massachusetts, Ray of Colorado and Ted of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Alex and Edward Zygmont and her sister, Jeanette (Zygmont) Bryant.
    Helen’s calling hours were from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, at the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial with military honors was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Army Nurse Corps Association Scholarship Fund, in memory of Helen Z. Tencza, and mailed to ANCA, P.O. Box 39235, San Antonio, TX 78218-1235
